STAGE 2 (2018)

360: 7 March of the Living Survivors
IWALK: 3 March of the Living Survivors
Travelogue: 5 March of the Living Survivors

Since 2014, International March of the Living and the USC Shoah Foundation have partnered on a range of projects preserving and making accessible Holocaust survivor testimony. This initiative has culminated in an expansive and compelling catalogue of Holocaust educational materials, including books, documentary films, and video testimony. The bulk of the material was filmed on location, with survivors often in the places where their stories unfolded.

Many of these survivors travelled on the March numerous times, sharing their wisdom and courage eloquently with students on the March of the Living.

Witness: Passing the Torch of Holocaust Memory to New Generations (2015, 2020 rev. ed.) is a joint publication of the International March of the Living and the USC Shoah Foundation

The book features digital watermarks embedded in the images of the survivors, liberators, and Righteous Among the Nations.

When photos are accessed by smartphone cameras, readers are redirected to video testimony hosted on the USC Shoah Foundation or March of the Living Digital Archive Project websites.

In 2018, International March of the Living and the USC Shoah Foundation launched an innovative project to film 18 March of the Living Holocaust survivors on location in 3 unique film formats:

360 on Location: Using 360-degree 3D technology, March of the Living Holocaust survivor testimonies were filmed on location, in the places where their Holocaust experiences unfolded. This multi-camera technology creates a new, immersive experience for the viewer.

IWALK is an interactive app utilizing testimonies shot in 360 with March of the Living Holocaust survivors in the very locations where their Holocaust stories transpired. Using GPS technology, students can use the app “on the go” to locate and listen to testimonies of March of the Living Holocaust survivors filmed in the very locations where the students are now visiting.

Travelogue: Survivors spontaneously recall their experiences and retrace the places where their stories unfolded when they visited Poland during the March of the Living with students. The footage taken during the week of March of the Living in Poland often captures details of stories never shared elsewhere in any previous testimony.

Virtual IWalks &  Mobile IWalks: Unlocking a New Window into our Past

Virtual IWalks were created for use on computers during Holocaust classroom instruction.

Mobile IWalks were created for smartphones utilized during educational on-site visits to Holocaust locations.

Both versions integrate Google Street View with in-person IWalk pedagogy.

Virtual IWalks in IWitness on the web and Mobile IWalks in the mobile IWalk app allow educators to bring their students on a journey online, through virtual tours of sites of memory, guided by survivors and witnesses who lived the histories that happened there.

Currently, Gabriella Karin’s testimony is available in the Virtual IWalk module on the web. Ed Mossberg and Max Eisens stories are available through the Mobile IWalk on mobile devices.

The app is available now for iOS and Android devices.
